NEWS RELEASE: Landwash Brewery Announces Beginning of Construction
Landwash Brewery to brew and serve beer in Mount Pearl by the end of 2018
Mount Pearl - 19 April 2018
The team at Landwash Brewery are happy to announce the beginning of the construction phase of Landwash Brewery at 181 Commonwealth Ave in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador. The three person team of Christina Coady, Jennifer Defreyne, and Chris Conway have been working over the past several months to develop the project, including the completion of the provincial environmental assessment and obtaining a municipal development permit from the city of Mount Pearl. Landwash Brewery has now begun its construction phase aiming to serve beer by the end of 2018 in an inhouse brewery taproom, onsite brewers’ retail of both growlers and cans, and in kegs to bars and restaurants.
Landwash Brewery’s team draws from both a professional brewing background and extensive project management expertise. Defreyne, who has twenty years of project management experience, partnered with Coady and Conway who were the founding brewers and co-head brewers at Toronto’s Folly Brewpub which ranked in the top ten breweries in Ontario in both editions of The Ontario Craft Beer Guide. “Landwash Brewery has been a dream of ours for a long time,” says Conway who, like Coady, is a native of neighbouring St. John’s. He continues, “it's so rare that you get to move home to not only pursue your dream, but also to work in your profession and to participate in the biggest craft beer boom in the provinces’ history. We feel really lucky.”
Landwash Brewery has a 15 BBL (roughly 1700 liters) system ordered from DME in Prince Edward Island with a scheduled delivery estimated for the end of the summer. In its first full year of projection, Landwash intends to brew over 1000 hL of beer, which works out to more than 200,000 473mL cans. “We hope to build a little bit of taproom culture here,” says Coady. “Taprooms are great, fun, family friendly spaces that can act as both tourism hubs and casual, comfortable neighbourhood hangouts,” she continues, “We’re really excited to bring that to Mount Pearl.” Located just off the Pitt’s Memorial Drive and near a future extension of the Team Gushue Highway at the intersection of Brookfield Road, Old Placentia Road, and Commonwealth Avenue, Landwash is only ten minutes from downtown St. John’s and less than twenty minutes from most of the Greater Metro Area.
More information about the beers that Landwash Brewery will be brewing will be announced in the coming months of construction before a targeted late 2018 opening. The current range of beers will trend toward modern American craft styles with some Belgian influences, which will also include some barrel aged beers and sour beers as the brewery develops. Landwash Brewery also intends to feature local food producers and food trucks as popup events throughout the year as the taproom will not have a permanent kitchen.
